What is a Toyota Hilux ECU remap?

Your Hilux's factory ECU is calibrated conservatively for a global market, the worst-case owner and every climate it will ever be sold into. A Toyota Hilux remap rewrites that calibration, the fuel, boost and timing, to suit how the vehicle is actually driven here: towing the van, touring loaded, working a full tray on southern Adelaide hills. The Hilux is already a strong, dependable ute, so the goal is to sharpen how it tows, tours and responds, not to chase a headline number.

A real custom remap is not an off-the-shelf chip or a remote, mail-order file that never sees your Hilux. We read the vehicle, write the tune for your exact engine, then verify it on the dyno. The factory map is saved first, so the tune is fully reversible. The Hilux is one of the most common utes through the workshop, so the calibrations are proven on local trucks, not a generic average. This is part of our diesel tuning work in Adelaide. One thing worth flagging early: the N80 1GD has a well-known reputation for DPF behaviour, and we set out our honest position on that further down the page. Tell us your Hilux's year and engine and we will tell you what is realistic.

More torque, better towing and economy for your Hilux

The gains that matter on a Hilux are about usable, real-world performance, not a single dyno headline. It is a tough, reliable ute by design, so a tune is about making it tow, tour and respond better while staying dependable. Every figure depends on your engine and any supporting mods, so we quote the realistic range for your vehicle rather than a number off a brochure. Here is where a tune makes the difference Hilux owners feel:

  • Stronger low- and mid-range torque for towing caravans, boats and trailers, and for pulling a loaded tray up hills without labouring or holding low gears.
  • Sharper throttle response so the 1GD and the auto stop feeling lazy off the mark and in traffic, a common Hilux owner complaint the conservative factory throttle calibration leaves on the table.
  • Better real-world fuel economy when driven sensibly. Many Hilux owners towing or touring see lower litres per 100km after a tune. The honest caveat: drive it hard and you will use more.
  • Cooler, monitored EGTs. We recommend fitting an exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensor so the engine is protected on long climbs, because over-fuelling without one can void warranty on related repairs.
  • Matched as a package, not one part. The remap is matched to any supporting mods (intake, exhaust, transmission lock-up) so the gains are safe and usable.

Tune plus supporting mods, matched as a package

Gains depend on your engine and supporting mods, so we give you a realistic range for your Hilux rather than an invented figure. The 1KD-FTV 3.0 D-4D (KUN / N70), the 1GD-FTV 2.8 (N80) and the 2GD-FTV 2.4 (N80) each respond differently, and the 1GD in particular has a strong module path as well as a flash route. Ask us what is realistic for your engine and build, and because the work is proven on our in-house dyno, what we tell you is what the dyno backs up, not a brochure claim.

Your Hilux tuned and verified on our in-house dyno

Every Hilux tune is written and load-tested live on our in-house chassis dyno. We measure real airflow, fuelling and EGTs under load, then dial the map to your specific vehicle, rather than flashing a generic file and hoping. This matters most on a Hilux: you chose it for durability, so the tune is built to keep it reliable, not to push it past safe limits. Your factory map is saved first, so the tune stays reversible.

We photograph the work and send you the images as proof of workmanship. We are an RAA Approved Repairer and all our work is fully guaranteed, with a 100% Result Guarantee and a 6-month or 10,000km service warranty on tunes.

Which Toyota Hilux generations we tune

  • KUN / N70 (2005 to 2015) - the 1KD-FTV 3.0 D-4D and 2KD-FTV 2.5. The classic Hilux remap, straightforward and proven, and the 1KD also has a strong module path via ECU=Shop (the Monster Max KD).
  • N80 (2015 on) - the 1GD-FTV 2.8 and 2GD-FTV 2.4. The current platform, and many 1GD ECUs are locked, so the result often comes via a module rather than a flash (see the next section). The N80 is also where the DPF conversation lives.
  • SR, SR5, Rogue and Rugged X trims - same engines, handled by build year and engine, not by trim. Find your year and engine above and the answer is yes, we tune it.

Not sure which generation you have? Ring us with the build year and engine for a straight answer on your exact Hilux.

What if your Hilux's ECU can't be remapped?

Some Hilux ECUs, particularly later 1GD N80 vehicles, are locked and cannot yet be safely remapped by flashing. On the Hilux this is more common than on most utes, so it is a real fork, not a throwaway line. In those cases we fit a piggyback or module solution instead, so your Hilux still gets a real, tested result. We are an authorised Uni-Chip dealer and an ECU=Shop modules for locked-ECU vehicles dealer and tuner.

The genuinely Toyota-relevant option here is the ECU=Shop Monster Max KD, which is built for the Toyota 1KD engine and comes with a long warranty, and there are throttle controllers and combos for the newer trucks. This is a real path, not a consolation prize: the result is verified on the dyno just like a remap. For the standard remap path, see ECU remapping.

Hilux DPF and EGR: the honest position

The N80 Hilux (1GD 2.8) is well known for DPF and regeneration trouble on short, stop-start trips: blocked filters, repeated regens and the DPF warning light. It is a question we get asked a lot, so here is the straight answer.

On a road-registered Hilux, removing or defeating the DPF or EGR is illegal in Australia and can void your insurance and warranty, so we do not do it on registered vehicles. For a blocked or failing DPF on a registered Hilux, the right fix is our professional DPF clean from $550. It restores power, economy and the normal regen cycle, keeps you legal and roadworthy, and costs a fraction of an OEM DPF replacement.

DPF and EGR removal is only for off-road, competition or non-registered Hilux, such as dedicated build rigs and export vehicles. For those it is done properly: mechanical removal plus a custom dyno-verified tune that is EGT-safe. See DPF delete (off-road only) and EGR delete (off-road only). We would rather keep you legal and keep your filter working than sell you a problem.

Toyota Hilux remap pricing

The honest entry point is custom ECU remapping from $1,395. The final figure depends on your Hilux's engine and year, whether it is a remap or a module fit for a locked ECU (more likely on a late 1GD), and whether supporting mods (an EGT sensor, exhaust, transmission lock-up) are included. We will quote your Hilux once we know the engine and how you use it, not from a fixed menu. Where the answer is a module rather than a flash, that route (for example the Monster Max KD) carries its own price and is quoted separately. Free loan cars mean a day off the Hilux is not a day off the road.

Yes when driven sensibly. A custom tune optimises fuelling for how you actually drive, and many Hilux owners towing or touring see lower real-world consumption. The honest caveat: drive it hard and you will use more.
