What goes into a 4x4 suspension upgrade?
A 4x4 suspension upgrade is not one part. It is matching the springs, shocks and ride height to how the vehicle is actually loaded and driven. Get that match right and your 4WD sits level under a full touring load, soaks up corrugations and tows without sagging. Get it wrong, and a one-size lift bought online and bolted on rides harshly, sits nose-up and wears tyres. This is part of our brakes and suspension services.
The pieces we set up as a package:
- Coil and leaf springs rated to the weight you actually carry, so the rear setup is not overwhelmed by a canopy, drawers and water.
- Shock absorbers, foam-cell or monotube, to control that weight over rough ground without fading on long corrugated roads.
- A lift kit for the clearance and bigger tyres your tracks need, matched to the vehicle rather than chosen for the look.
- Load-assist such as airbags or heavier rear springs for towing and the canopy, drawer and long-range setup.
Common-rail diesel utes and wagons are the core of what we set up: the Ranger, Hilux, D-Max, Triton, Navara, LandCruiser and Prado. Tell us how you load and use your 4WD and we will spec the right setup.

Suspension built for the way you load, tow and tour
- No more sagging rear under a loaded canopy, drawers, water tank or a van on the towball. Load-rated springs sit the vehicle level.
- Control on corrugations and dirt. Quality shocks stop the bouncing, fade and wallow on long touring roads.
- Safe towing and load-carrying. The right spring and shock package keeps headlights level, braking predictable and the rig stable.
- Clearance for bigger tyres and rougher tracks, with a properly matched lift kit, not just height for the look.
- A setup matched to your vehicle and use, not a generic spec, so the gains are usable and the ride is right for daily driving as well as touring.
Springs, shocks and lift, matched as a package
Because the same workshop also tunes these 4WDs, the suspension is specced with the whole loaded, tuned, touring vehicle in mind, not in isolation. A 4WD set up for more torque and loaded with a canopy, water and a van on the back needs springs, shocks and lift chosen as one package so the whole rig behaves on the road and the tracks.

Tough Dog suspension, supplied and fitted in Adelaide

Trusted Mechanical is a Tough Dog dealer and fitter. Tough Dog is Australian-engineered 4WD suspension built for our conditions: foam-cell shocks, a range of spring rates for different loads, and kits available in raised heights to suit how the vehicle is set up. It is the brand the southern-Adelaide 4WD crowd asks for by name.
We supply the kit and fit it, with a wheel alignment after, rather than handing you a box to sort out yourself. We photograph the work and send you the images, so you see exactly what went on and how it was done. We are an RAA Approved Repairer and all work is fully guaranteed.
Setting your 4WD up the right way
To spec the right kit we need to know the vehicle, how it is loaded (canopy, drawers, dual battery, water, long-range tank, towball weight) and where it is driven, blacktop touring versus serious off-road. The more honestly you tell us how the 4WD is used, the better the setup matches it.
A 4WD being built for touring is rarely just suspension. It is often a tune your 4WD for the extra load and a canopy for the gear, and doing them together means the whole vehicle is matched. If you are loading up a ute, we can fit a canopy and set the suspension up for the weight, and sort the brakes to match a heavier, faster-loaded 4WD at the same time. It all routes back through our Brakes & Suspension Adelaide hub.

Get your 4x4 suspension quoted
The final figure depends on the vehicle, the kit (spring rate, shock type and lift height), and whether it is a full kit or specific parts, plus the wheel alignment after fitting. Rather than a fixed menu, we quote your 4WD once we know how you load and use it, so the price reflects the setup you actually need.
Free loan cars are included while your vehicle is in, so a day off the 4WD is not a day off the road. Tell us the make, model and how it is set up and we will put a quote together.
