What is DPF cleaning and why do filters block up?
A blocked DPF, a dashboard warning light or a failed regen does not have to mean a $2,000 to $4,000 replacement. A diesel particulate filter (DPF) traps the soot from your exhaust and periodically burns it off in a cycle called regeneration. Lots of short trips, stop-start city driving and low-load running stop the filter reaching the temperature it needs to regenerate, so soot and ash build up, airflow drops, the DPF warning light comes on and the vehicle can drop into limp mode.
DPF cleaning is the professional process that removes that built-up soot and ash and restores the filter so it flows and regenerates normally again, without removing it from the vehicle and without an expensive replacement. It is part of our diesel cleaning services. A real DPF regeneration clean restores the filter and addresses the cause. That is a very different thing from a "DPF off tune", which switches the filter off in software and is illegal on a registered vehicle (more on that below). Bring it in and we will tell you whether a clean will fix it.

How our DPF regeneration cleaning works
Here is exactly how the job runs, in plain English.
- Diagnose. We read the fault codes, check the DPF pressure differential and confirm the filter is blocked with soot and ash (cleanable) rather than physically damaged (replace).
- Find the cause. Short-trip use, a failing EGR, worn injectors or a faulty DPF pressure or temperature sensor are common reasons a filter blocks. Cleaning without fixing the cause means it blocks again.
- Clean and restore. Our specialist DPF regeneration cleaning process removes the trapped soot and ash and returns the filter's flow and regeneration to normal, usually within a few hours.
- Verify. We confirm the filter is flowing, the warning light is cleared (when the blockage was the cause) and the regeneration cycle is working before the vehicle leaves.
We photograph the work and send you the images
Every job is photographed and the images are sent to you, so you see exactly what was done and why. It is the proof most workshops leave on the table, and on a DPF clean it shows you the difference between the blocked filter that came in and the restored one that goes back out.

Why clean your DPF instead of replacing it
- From $550, a fraction of replacement cost. An OEM DPF can run into the thousands. Cleaning restores the one you already have. It is not done anywhere else in Australia at this price.
- Keeps you legal and roadworthy. The filter stays fitted, so unlike a delete there is no emissions-law, insurance or roadworthy problem on a registered vehicle.
- Restores power and economy. A blocked filter chokes the engine. Clearing it brings back throttle response and fuel economy.
- Clears the warning light and limp mode. When the blockage was the cause, the DPF light goes out and normal regeneration resumes.
- Done in-house, usually in a few hours. Not sent away for days. Your vehicle is back quickly, and free loan cars are available while it is in.
- Honest diagnosis first. If the substrate is cracked or melted, we will tell you it needs replacing rather than sell you a clean that will not hold.
That diagnosis-first approach is why owners trust the recommendation. As an RAA Approved Repairer we work to a fair-pricing promise: we will not charge you for work you do not need. If a clean is the right fix, you get it from $550. If it is not, we will say so.
DPF cleaning or DPF delete - which is legal for your vehicle?
On a vehicle driven on Australian public roads, removing or defeating the DPF is illegal and can void your insurance and fail a roadworthy. So for a registered vehicle, cleaning the existing filter is the right and legal fix. A DPF delete is only appropriate for vehicles that never touch a public road: dedicated off-road and competition rigs, non-registered machinery, or export-bound vehicles.
We would rather keep you legal and keep your filter working than sell you a problem. If your vehicle is registered, the answer is a clean, and you are in the right place. If it is a genuine off-road build, see DPF delete for off-road and non-registered vehicles. For the full breakdown of DPF and EGR delete law in Australia, see our diesel cleaning systems guide.

Stop your DPF blocking again
A DPF rarely blocks for no reason. Here are the common causes and how we fix each one.
- Short-trip and city driving. The filter never gets hot enough to regenerate. We will advise on driving habits and, where appropriate, carry out a forced regen.
- Dirty injectors and poor combustion. Worn or dirty injectors put more soot into the filter. Our diesel injector cleaning addresses this.
- Fuel contamination and diesel bug. Contaminated fuel fouls the system. Our fuel-system cleaning and Elite 2-micron filtration help keep it clean.
- A failing EGR or intake carbon build-up. We also offer intake carbon cleaning to restore airflow through the engine.
On some vehicles a correctly written ECU remap can improve combustion and regeneration behaviour as well.

DPF cleaning cost and how to book in
The honest entry point is DPF cleaning from $550, usually completed in a few hours, a fraction of the cost of an OEM replacement. The final figure depends on the vehicle, the degree of blockage, and whether the underlying cause (injectors, EGR or a sensor) needs attention too, so we diagnose first and quote before any work. Free loan cars mean a day without the vehicle is not a day off the road.
DPF regeneration cleaning, vehicle kept legal and roadworthy. Final quote depends on your vehicle and how badly the filter is blocked.

Yes. Our specialist DPF regeneration cleaning process restores the filter in place, so it flows and regenerates normally again, without removal and without an expensive replacement.
When the blockage was the cause, yes. Once the filter is restored and the regeneration cycle is working, the DPF light goes out. If a sensor or another fault is involved, we will find and fix that too.
Usually a few hours. We offer free loan cars while your vehicle is with us, so you are not stuck waiting and a day in the workshop is not a day off the road.
If the filter is blocked with soot and ash, cleaning restores it for a fraction of replacement cost. If the substrate is cracked or melted, it must be replaced. We will tell you honestly which one your vehicle needs.
Usually short trips and city driving, where the filter never gets hot enough to regenerate, or a cause like dirty injectors, fuel contamination or a failing EGR. We fix the cause, not just the symptom, so it does not block again.
No. Removing the DPF on a road-registered vehicle is illegal and can void insurance and fail a roadworthy. Cleaning is the legal fix. We only delete DPFs on off-road, competition or non-registered vehicles.
Yes. We are in Lonsdale and clean DPFs for diesel owners across southern Adelaide, including Christies Beach, Hallett Cove, Sheidow Park, Reynella and Noarlunga.
